Saltburn Cliff Tramway

Saltburn by the Sea is a charming coastal town located in the North East of England, known for its beautiful beaches, Victorian architecture, and unique attractions such as the Saltburn Cliff Tramway. The tramway, which is the oldest water-driven funicular railway in the world, has been in operation since 1884 and is a must-see for tourists visiting the area.

The Saltburn Cliff Tramway was built to connect the town to the beach and was originally powered by a steam engine. However, in 1891 it was converted to a water-balance system, which is still in use today. The tramway consists of two cars, each capable of carrying up to 30 passengers. The cars are attached to a cable that runs between the top and bottom stations, and as one car goes up, the other goes down, powered by the weight of water in tanks.

Riding the tramway is a unique experience and offers spectacular views of the coast and the town. The top station is located in the Valley Gardens, where visitors can also explore the surrounding woods and take in the Saltburn Viaduct. The bottom station is located on the beach, where visitors can enjoy the beach huts, surf schools, fish and chip restaurants, coffee shops and pubs.

Saltburn by the Sea is also home to the last remaining Victorian ‘Iron’ Pier, which is a great spot for fishing, and surfing alongside. The town also has a Victorian Tea Rooms, where visitors can enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake prior to exploring the area. The town centre has a variety of small business retailers and a supermarket that can be easily reached via the Tram, as well as our beach huts (of course).
