Every Day is a Beach Hut Day in May

THE MONTH OF MAY – EVERY DAY IS A BEACH HUT DAY

With the turn of the tide and rolling in on a wave the Month of May landed albeit with a cool kind of freshness in the air even though the sunshine was breaking through. The temperature swinging like a pendulum. It feels warm and comfortable in the sun and pretty uncomfortable and chilly in the shade. There is plenty of space to walk along the Promenade, nevertheless, everyone is vying for the same path, the path that gives you a bit of a balance between the heat and the cold. Sporadic blue skies are showing through the grey clouds. It could possibly rain! This is the weather battle that persists into early June, and often beyond! Winter tries hard to continue to dominate whilst being forced out under duress by the nudge of Spring, who in turn knows it has to make way for the Summer, and often an appearance from Autumn. These are the reasons May is renowned for its variable weather and subsequently, the days during this month are never quite the same. With the possibility of all seasons making an appearance in one hour let alone in one day it is in our opinion the most exciting month. The days during the Month of May allow for a variety of Beach and Promenade-based activities and events and present the most stunning sunsets and in contrast, dramatic thunderstorms.

ACTIVITIES TO DO DURING MAY

Fly a kite – head into the breeze on the spacious beach directly to the front of the Beach Huts. It really is an activity of exhilaration and relaxation in equal measure.
Have your camera ready – capture the team of horses as they kick up their hooves in the shallow waves during their morning canter along the beach or wait for the early evening light known as the Blue Hour
to take amazing shots from the South Gare to Huntcliffe. Not forgetting to set your view finder through the windows of the Beach Huts to capture a kaleidoscope of colour.
Catch the waves with your board of choice – Saltburn Surf School is our neighbour and can provide everything you need. The surf at Saltburn is legendary.
Watch the storm roll in – an Out to Sea Performance full of drama, courtesy of the weather.
Get everyone involved in a beach clean – it is crazy what you’ll find washed up on the shore and there is nothing more satisfying as doing your bit for the environment.
Paint a picture – splash the water colours onto your canvas and take away a memory that can be displayed for all to see.

BEACH HUT EXTENDED HOURS

When the dark nights creep in the days are shorter. No sooner are we climbing out of bed before we once again find ourselves heading back to that comfortable place – usually to get the day over! The good news is with the arrival of the Month of May the Opening Hours of the Beach Huts have been extended to allow you to take advantage of the whole day. We are into the light nights and we need to make the days count. Remember, the longer days are just visiting for a while!

From May 1st access is from 1030am until 6.30pm. Time is on now on your side and the need to rush to do and see everything has been carried away on the May breeze.

THANK GOODNESS FOR A BEACH HUT

You know the story. You’re taking a chance with the weather! After all it is the month of May. Nevertheless, the plan is in place and everyone is heading to Saltburn. Members of your extended family, friends including the four-legged kind are all joining you.
The buckets and spades are hanging over one of the handles of the pushchair whilst the other accommodates a bag or two of kids’ stuff. The selection of coats is resting in the fold of the pushchair hood. The camera case is thrown over a shoulder and the cool box is in one hand leaving the other one free to struggle with the trolley, which just happens to be loaded to the brim with everything and more of what you ‘just in case’ might need. I’m sure this resonates with a lot of people! And then you’re welcomed to the Beach Huts. You exhale deeply as you now know it’s going to be a good day…..

REASONS TO HIRE A BEACH HUT

1. A base from which to explore. If the members of your party choose to head off in different directions at different times the meeting place remains the same.

2. A safe place where everything can be contained and securely stored away allowing you the freedom to take part in activities without keeping one eye on your belongings. The days of drawing straws never had a happy ending!

3. With two Bank Holidays, a Spring Half Term and the Saltburn Pier 150th Anniversary Celebration you’ll be glad of the opportunity to retreat for a little respite during the busier days in May.

4. You have your very own space to enjoy fish and chips (sprinkled only with salt, not sand) or to indulge in the tasty wares that arrived in the ‘full to the brim’ trolley. The flick of a switch and the kettle is on for a hot beverage.

5. You have a private changing room where you can squeeze into or peel off your wet and sandy wetsuit. It was never an easy task beneath the towel!

6. A place to shelter during the colder days (with the hire of a heater you have a toasty warm Beach Hut in no time at all) and a place offering shade when the sun shines a little too much. Is there such a thing?

7. No roads to cross, all amenities at lower promenade level, wheelchair friendly and with views from the door and direct access to the beach this can mean only one thing – everyone can be included. No one has to stay at home!

8. The view! Pull up a deck chair and you have the best seats on the Promenade to view the world go by. And everyone likes to people watch. Yes, even you!

SALTBURN PIER 150th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

The much-loved Victorian Pier reaches the grand old age 150! The celebration activities take place on the Lower Promenade from 10am and continue throughout the day ending with a fireworks finale and new Pier lighting at 9.45pm.
